The Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR Camera is designed with the pro shooter in mind, as evidenced by its tough magnesium alloy body, large 3.2" LCD, the Intelligent Viewfinder, and of course the 18.1Mp CMOS sensor, among other professional features. If you're looking for a tough rig that knows what a photographer wants and needs, then Canon answers the call with this impressive offering.

The EOS-1D X was built to stand up to the grind of daily shooting. In addition to its large pixel size - for outstanding still images and 1920 x 1080 video - the camera provides the serious photographer with a generous ergonomic design, along with smart layout of the controls. Dual CF card slots ensure that every shot can be captured, while the Gigabit Ethernet terminal and the WFT-E6A Wireless File Transmitter and the GPS connection provide quick connectivity for file sharing on the fly. What's more, the magnesium alloy body is dust and weather resistant, and features shutter durability of up to 14 fps for up to 400,000 cycles - allowing you to do your job without hesitation, or worry.

The EOS-1D X's 18.1Mp CMOS sensor is a full 24 x 36mm frame sensor, capturing 5184 x 3456 images. That translates into high-quality, JPEG and RAW images, to impress even the most demanding shooters. The camera also provides 14-bit processing and a standard ISO range of 100-51200, with expanded sensitivities of 50 to 102400 and 204800. All of this is made possible by the camera's Dual DIGIC 5+ Image Processors, which enable a 17x faster processing speeds and greater noise reduction, among other duties.

When it comes to auto focus, the 61-Point High Density Reticular AF ensures fast, accurate image capture thanks to its Offset Array Sensor. With a multitude of ways in which to enable AF you can quickly access your desired point selection for your exact situation. Another tool for dead-on images is the EOS iSA (Intelligent Subject Analysis System). This sensor has 252 zones general metering and 35 zones for low-light metering. By incorporating face and color recognition data the system is stable even under rapidly changing lighting conditions. In addition, the E-TTL flash metering benefits from these improvements as well.

Like most all pro DSLRs these days, the EOS-1D X provides you with 1920 x 1080 HD video capture. The camera offers both ALL-I and IPB compression, supports H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile, and automatically splits files greater than 4GB for extended recording up to 29:59 minutes without interruption. The camera also offers up Live View, a 64-step volume control, a sound recording level meter, and a Quick Control Dial which allows for silent adjustments - using the dial's touch pad - during shooting.

I got this camera body in time to shoot some great sporting events here in the Rockies including the U.S. Pro Cycling Challenge, the 45th annual Ruggerfest and the Motherlode Volleyball Classic. For me, the AI tracking is the "must have" for any sports photographer and the 1Dx is head and shoulders over anything I have used in the past. Now with the latest firmware update giving me red focus points on the viewing screen, low light shooting is even easier. Setting the custom settings took a few minutes and then it was shoot away! The burst rate made for some amazing captures as well as the super fast transfer rate to the memory card meant I was never waiting. I like the slightly changed menus items and I found them very easy to navigate through. After reading up on setting and changing the AI functions, I found I could easily switch back and forth from with getting the burst off or the focus first. Great for shooting sports like rugby and hockey. The low light capabilities are just great and shooting in the range of ISO 6,400 are well within reach and only need minor touchup for noise in post, if at all. The rugged build gives me the usual confidence that I have with Canon's 1D models. I shoot in rain or shine, so this is a great feature. All in all, a complete package for me!

I use the 1DX for weddings as a replacement for my 5DII. Pros: The AF is responsive and fast in good light, and AI Servo tracks relentlessly. I can even use the 85/1.2 lens to track slow moving people, like the bride coming down the aisle. 12 fps is blazing fast. Images up to 12,800 ISO are usable with post processing noise cleanup, and the noise is like film grain. Two CF card slots are nice. The battery lasts an entire wedding over 1200 shots. Actually, I've shot 1700 frames and still not had the battery go out. Canon speedlites can now be controlled from the camera menu. I can actually use the speedlite built-in functions because they are simple to program. Cons: It is heavy. I lift weights a few days before a wedding to strengthen my arms. The AF points are grayed out so it is difficult to place them on a high contrast area in the dark. For weddings this is a big deal. I sure hope they fix this. I am not talking about when AF locks on, but when I press the shutter halfway the AF would blink red on the 5DII and other 1D's just momentarily to let me know where it was. AF freezes about twice on a typical wedding session. Repeatedly pressing the shutter button or turning the camera power off is what awakens it. It is worst with the 70-200/2.8 IS II. For some reason, that lens is now difficult to focus in low light. With a 580EXII on the hotshoe and radio trigger plugged into the camera sync port, the playback button freezes about 2 out of 10 times. It will show the image for a fraction of a second, then go blank. Repeatedly pressing it causes the lens to hunt as though the shutter button is pressed halfway (even though it is not). Sometimes I have to turn the camera off to get the playback button to function properly. This seems to happen every time the couple wants to see an image on the back. AI Servo slows down quite a bit in low light. Combined with the 61-point automatic focus (where the camera selects the focus points), AI Servo becomes useless. Off-center AF points are less sensitive than the center AF in low light. They get less sensitive further away, with the edge AF points a full stop less sensitive. I exclusively use the center AF and recompose in churches and receptions for maximum AF speed. Overall, this camera has great potential, but needs firmware updates to fix annoying issues. I was just as nitpicky when I purchased the 5DII and it worked flawlessly in 80+ weddings. The grayed out AF, freezing AF, and freezing playback button are my biggest gripes.

Canon C300, 5DII, C100 User adds 1DX MKII

By Brian C

from Burbank, CA, United States

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I recently purchased the 1DX mkII after seeing the specs on the new 5dmk4. This is a wonderful camera with the canon image you'd expect. I gave it an average rating because here in 2016 other than the wonderful AF there's really nothing else groundbreaking about the camera. Don't get me wrong, the AF is amazing but .... It really seems strange to me that Canon would not include features like C Log for for video and the lack of 4k HDMI output is also strange considering that many cameras costing $3000 LESS have these features. These really aren't even features anymore this is the norm other than with Canon. Canon's own XC10 has C Log for under $3k but for $6k it's not included? I have to say that for the first time in years I'm disappointed with Canon video. Shame.

Terrific camera, held back by firmware

By DManningImages

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I come from a stills background, and transitioned from another brand to Canon for their color science and the video features in the then-cutting edge 5DmkII. As I've become more interested in producing good video, I shopped for a good HD video machine. Camcorders are great devices, but their poor color science and small sensors made them unacceptable for my own uses. Like everyone else, I was very interested in the FF mirrorless realm. After testing one, I realized that I'd have to use adapters of varying qualities to shoot with my terrific Canon glass. Since I only need 1080p HD, I looked into the 1DX.The build quality is phenomenal, and encourages field use. The still image capture capabilities are truly breathtaking...especially the customizable focus capabilities, which are even useful to non-sports shooters. As I get my video workflow perfected, I'm disappointed, however, in the lack of Canon support for the 1DX's video features. Simple firmware updates would unleash the capability to output clean HDMI signals for external recording, and well as allow the addition of an Slog-3 recording curve, to capture the most data. The sensor in the 1DX is amazing...but most of that technology is lost at capture for video. A decision by Canon to update the 1DX to clean HDMI and Slog-3 would enable hybrid shooters who DON'T NEED 4K video to enjoy all the capabilities of this terrific camera. This wouldn't impinge on professional video shooters who insist upon 4K capture...it would just enable shooters who are covering important daily events, the bread and butter of Canon and the foundation of it's reputation, to output professional products for their intended, limited audiences (print and online). After all, clean HDMI was updated for the consumer-oriented 5DmkIII already.I look forward to the day Canon decides to support it's loyal customers who use Canon cameras and lenses to push their creativity. I enjoy shooting the EOS 1DX and many photographers would be thrilled to renew their enthusiasm for this terrific camera. I'd recommend this camera to others, with these basic caveats.

I received my camera last week to replace and or use along side my 1D MK III that is still working very well. I like the feel of the camera and the new one is much faster and off course the pictures are much better with the increase of the size of the sensor.

Flows Like Butter

By Ezra

from New York, NY, United States

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

This is my review of the Canon 1DX. This camera is considered to be the flagship pro photographer DSLR manufactured by Canon, which was released originally in the spring of 2012. As of this writing today February 5th 2016, Canon just announced 3 days ago their upcoming successor to the 1DX, the Canon 1DX Mark II. Regardless of the new exciting news, the Canon 1DX still packs a magnificent technological punch! The first time that I picked up this camera, I could not believe that so much power could be encased in such a device. the 1DX is definitely a big camera and it is certainly built like a tank, but it was easy to getting used through the user interface software because I'm familiar with several other Canon cameras. One of the biggest highlights about this camera that I'm so impressed with is the insanely fast 12 FPS (frames per second). When using the camera to shoot sports and fast action movements, the 1DX does a marvelous job at capturing subjects frame by frame with ease. The high 12 FPS is also aided by an extremely advanced and super-fast autofocusing system with 61 points. Even if the first one or two shots comes out of focus, the rest of the shot and hi continuous mode adjusts quickly in focus and will make your images will be tack sharp on your subjects. Despite having a lower 18-megapixel sensor compared to most DSLR's on the market, the 1DX still produces fairly detailed images full of rich color rendering, sharp contrast and clean images. Those clean images are aided by a very sophisticated ISO light sensitivity system which ranges from 100 to 51,200. It's amazing how this camera produces clean images still in low light environments and situations. The Canon 1DX is Canon's first 1D series with both a full frame sensor, high frame per second, HD 1080p video and fully equipped with the highest specifications required for pro sports photography. The 1DX is best suited for sports, wildlife, and professional events. The 1DX is without compromise and it is still leaps and bounds beyond in today's marketplace. If you're in need for one, life is too short so go get one!

No regrets

By Wane

from Omaha, NE, United States

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

This camera is truly the ultimate SLR. I am thrilled to own it. I shoot stills 99% of the time. So I was a disappointed when Canon released another full body camera with video. However, with the recent reduction in price I could not pass on the opportunity to own this wonderful camera. I have always shot photos with Canon since the days of the AE-1 and have never regretted the choice of Canon. There is a learning curve but I always welcome the challenge of learning new equipment. This camera encompasses all I need in a camera. I love the full frame, the fast fps, speedy focusing and of course the HD video capability. I guess I'll have to remember to use the video more often since the focus capability has improved so much. I now have to decide what camera(s) to keep or let go. I own a 5D mkII, 1D mk III and a 7D mk II along with this new camera. I am keeping and using all for now. All of the Canon bodies and the lenses I collected have provided me ample options for all types of photographs. For now I am shooting almost exclusively with this camera to learn everything there is to know. I like the feel of the full body although it has some weight to it. I feel like I can shoot any type of photo in any conditions. Thank you Canon.

very good but AF points are hard 2 see with primes

By Pompo

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

very fast motor drive and AF is excellent. The only horrible thing about the "intelligent viewfinder" is that the AF points are translucent and shooting in continuos servo AF the pare practically invisible and VERY hard to see. I missed MANY shots because of this. Also using primes 1.2 and 1.4 the focus points become even more transparent and in bright daylight are almost invisible. Canon needs to go back to the old way AF points which were bright red and clearly visible as with the 1D Mark IV and Canon 5D Mark II ( The 5D mark III and all newer cameras has this incredibly stupid "Intelligent viewfinder"! Iso is very good with some noise reduction up to 12800
