This lens is a great alternative to the standard 18-55mm IS. Its extended range makes this a great all-purpose lens. Superb quality for a Non-L lens. I do wish that the green/cyan chromatic aberration weren't as apparent. I used this lens in college and for some light commercial work. It has served me well for the past 3 years, and I will sad to see it go when I make the switch to the new 5D mark II and will no longer be able to use it. I purchased it with a 20D and it has been an excellent pairing.

I've had this lens since my 20D and have used it a lot for everyday photography. I have been very happy with the lens performance and the resulting photos I have taken. However, the lens started to malfunction recently - unable to achieve auto focus. The problem occurs in various lighting conditions and aperture settings. After searching a few forums for information, it seems that this is not an uncommon problem. I've read about several users having to have Canon replace the servo motor as the fix. So, great lens, but disappointing in what we have come to expect from Canon quality.

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon 9517A002 EF-S 1785mm f/45.6 IS USM Lens:

I bought this lens about 11 years ago and have taken 4000-5000 photos with it. However within this time I had to repair the auto focus drive once and the lens has now failed again (camera shows error 99) and I am assuming it is a drive motor problem again. My other lens still functions fine with my 30D camera. Rather than plow more money into this lens, I will buy a new lens (maybe a Sigma to get away from Canon mechanical problems

Great walking around lens for crop-sensor bodies

    By Eric379

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon 9517A002 EF-S 1785mm f/45.6 IS USM Lens:

I've owned this lens for 10 years, having purchased it shortly after buying my 20D back in 2005. The lens has always performed perfectly for me - never a hiccup of any sort. To be fair, the lens does not produce "L-series" quality, but then, it's not an "L-series" lens. It's reasonably sharp edge to edge, with about a stop of vignetting at the corners, particularly open wide. Focus is accurate and fast, zoom is smooth, and it covers the 35mm equivalent angle-of-view ranges of about 28-135mm, which makes it a very versatile piece of glass indeed! It suffers a bit from ghosting flare which is manageable with the optional petal hood (EW-73B) and a tad bit of distortion at the wide angle end. By far my worst gripe is the chromatic aberration (purple and green fringing). It's quite noticeable in high-contrast edges such as tree branches against a bright sky. However, that and the other issues are easily corrected in applications such as Adobe Lightroom. If you're not post-processing your images, you're probably not going to notice these issues in the first place. After 10 years and many thousands of images the lens continues to perform well. I have since upgraded my crop-sensor body to a 60D, where the lens is still my go-to, always-mounted, everyday carry optic. I'd love another stop or two of light, but the IS helps with that, and the higher ISO capabilities of the 60D as compared to my old 20D take care of my occasional need for higher shutter speeds in dim lighting. If you're looking for a workhorse of a lens at a budget-friendly price point, this one is definitely worth consideration.

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon 9517A002 EF-S 1785mm f/45.6 IS USM Lens:

his lens is clearly an attempt by Canon to replicate the success of their earlier 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM, which gained a strong reputation as an excellent performer on 35mm film; and they did it.

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon 9517A002 EF-S 1785mm f/45.6 IS USM Lens:

There seems to be a lot of quality control issues with this lens. The main problen i have with this lens is "zoom creep". Its also hard to focus manually. Other than that, the lens is good. I traded the kit lens that came with the camera for this lens, and i'm glad i did. Going by the reviews, it seems like there are a lot of lemons that get by quality control, so its a hit or miss with this lens. I would look elsewhere if i needed a reliable lens.

Excellent lens, when it works. The problem is I can't tell when it's going to work, and when it's not. It's almost moody. I stuck with Canon, and got 2 new lenses to replace it. Keeping it as a possible backup. I would not recommend it, especially at that price.

Took 11, 000 pictures with this lens, then suddenly it had a communications failure with t3i. this is a known defect with this lens -- i.e., the flexible cable inside the lens that does the electronic communication wears out and fails. The lens then stops working completely. The lens was bought in 2012 and failed after 18 months (out of warranty of course). That it failed on a trip to an african country was very disconcerting. Fortunately I had an EF 35mm 4L, an EFS 10-22mm, and an EF 70-200 mm 4L with me. Will probably either get it fixed (have Canon replace the cable) or buy an EF 24-70mm 4L for a more dependable lens...having a lens fail on a trip is untenable. Such a product with a known defect-- particularly given the fact this lens was bought 4 years after it was introduced by Canon just shouldn't happen!! The defect should have been corrected within 2 years of its introduction.

The autofocus failed during a trip at the Everglades, I had to work on manual mode all the time. The repair is a very difficult task and costly. I has the lens for over two years, Canon should stop advertising this lens.

This lens failed when I went to the galapagos. Good thing I had a backup, since having no wide angle would have been a big problem. Came home to find out these lenses are simply bad and wear out. Unreliable autofocus past 18mm means the lens isn't worth much. Buy something else.
