What is a BNC Connector?
Originally built for military use, and short for Bayonet Neill-Concelman (i.e. the bayonet design and the two inventors), BNC is a type of coaxial cable for RF connections. It is designed with two bayonet lugs for quick quarter turn connect/disconnect and used in critical applications where accidental disconnect is minimized. BNC cables are often used with radio-frequency electronics, audio recording equipment, aviation, antennas and other professional equipment.

Common Types of BNC Connectors
There are two common BNC types in the broadcast industry: 50Ω and 75Ω. Typically, the 75Ω cable has a smaller dielectric, and the connector housing has different dimensions than the 50Ω version. 50Ω connectors are designed to be used up to 4 GHz, while 75Ω cables are intended for 2 GHz or less.

Can I Use 50 and 75 Ohm Cables Together?
BNC connectors are compatible with each other, even if they have a different electrical resistance. The 50Ω and 75Ω versions comply with IEC standards, which means they can mate with no adverse effects.
