What is an SPL Meter?

SPL meters measure the loudness of acoustic vibrations. Essentially, the handheld device has a microphone that can detect sound pressure via the diaphragm. As the diaphragm moves, the pressure deviation is converted to an electrical signal, which is measured in volts.

The meter's design is unique from a standard microphone, which has a distinct sensitivity value that can be determined with constant sound pressure. Instead, the SPL meter converts the electrical signal back to a decibel value, and this is displayed on the screen.

How are SPL Meters Used?

Typically, these meters measure noise pollution in a variety of environments. Whether you're trying to design a sound stage or a film studio, SPL meters are used throughout the process. There's even an international standard for SPL meter quality, called IEC 61672-1:2013.

SPL Meters vs. Loudness Meters

It's important to note that an SPL meter does not provide accurate measurements for human-perceived loudness, because there are more variables involved. For example, SPL meters do not account for frequency, and this can have a substantial effect on perceived loudness. To get a better reading, you'll need a loudness meter, which measures the full frequency spectrum, compression levels, and more.
