VU Meters ( VU = Volume Unit) are among the simplest of meter designs and has been used since the very beginning of the audio broadcasting and recording industry. VU Meters were designed to display an approximation to the RMS voltage level of electrical signals — RMS ('Root Mean Square') voltage is a complicated-sounding engineering measure of the average voltage level of electrical signals.
