The J PRE 500 mic pre is inspired by the flagship Aphex 1788A remote controlled preamp. They both use the same Jensen JT11K8 nickel input Transformer. But unlike the 1788A, the J PRE 500 also features a Jensen JT- 11DL nickel output-balancing transformer. As the 1788A is a highly advanced, remote controllable, eight-channel mic pre with multiple analog and digital outputs per channel, it does not have a modest price tag. The J PRE 500 provides affordable access to the legendary 1788A sound.
The J PRE 500also features the Aphex patented Mic-Limiter technology. This is a limiter that works before the preamp. With the limiter on, it is nearly impossible to clip the input of the preamp. The limiter is fairly transparent, but does add a bit of it’s own color to the sound. A signal will tend to sound bigger with the Mic- Lim engaged.
A 10Mohm, 1?4” input is provided on the front panel allowing the connection of instruments like guitar and bass. This input overrides the input on the rear of the receiving frame when connected. A 3-way switch is provided allowing the user to select an output level of +16, +20.
The J PRE 500 features a 20-sement input meter. Many other 500 series preamps only offer a signal and clip LED. Our 20-segment meter makes it MUCH easier to set proper input levels. The input gain pot starts at +26dBu at a fully counter clockwise setting and boosts up to +65dBu at a fully clockwise setting. This provides enough gain to properly operate dynamic, condenser and ribbon microphones. A -26dB pad button is provided giving the J PRE 500a full 65dB of headroom when the pad is engaged. Buttons are also provided for 48V phantom power, phase reverse, 75Hz high pass filter and Mic Limiter on/off.
