I recently got this lens for my my camera and I am VERY HAPPY with this lens...I foresee it remaining on my camera the majority of the time except for those times I have a particular use in mind that is better served by a different lens. Now I'm sure that you have likely read various highly technical reviews on this lens and I'm not going to deny some of the issues these reviews identify... Is it heavy? Yes (but it is built VERY solidly). Is there some vingetting at 28mm & f/3.5? Yes (but not much more than a comparable prime at its widest, stop it down a couple and you're fine, and don't forget the wonders of photoshop). Is there some barrel distortion at 28mm? Yes. Now for those of you who demand every shot you have ever taken to have the ultimate in career making absolute uncompromised tack sharpness and have the ability to predict the exact focal length you need, you'll need to stick to your L-Series prime. But now that we've gotten past that, lets put it into real-world perspective for the rest of us. Instead of the ultimate, this lens will give you "only" genuinely high quality images. Remember, this lens covers 8 primes: 28, 35, 50, 85, 100, 135, 200, and 300mm (not to mention everything in between). How much would those 8 primes cost you? Yes, it's still expensive, but wow, how reasonably priced this lens suddenly became!!! And you don't have to switch from lens to lens to lens to keep up with the action...LIFE DOESN'T PAUSE WHILE YOU'RE SWITCHING LENSES. No more missed shots or risking introducing dust. You've got an amazing range...wide angle to meaningful telephoto, covering virtually everything most of us generally need. Put this lens on your camera and you'll get that shot that you otherwise may have likely missed. Is 3.5~5.6 a fast lens? No, but let's not forget the high ISO's that are now offered with very well controlled noise (graininess). And the image stabilizer is incredible...I have successfully hand held shots at 300mm down to 1/15 sec!!! The focus is quick and quiet, and it will focus very close making it something of a macro lens for those who don't have enough of a need to justify having a separate dedicated macro lens. If you don't mind the (notable) size and weight, and can afford only one lens (i.e. 'this' lens), then THIS IS THE LENS I WOULD RECOMMEND. And until you can convince Canon to market a 20-400 f/2~4 with image quality that can satisfy the picky critics that live exclusively in the world of L-primes (such a lens would cost far more than my truck, I'm sure), this will CONTINUE to be the do-everything lens I'd recommend.

I am a professional. I shoot NFL, NHL, MLB NCAA and news as well. I REALLY wanted this lens to work. I used it on a new 7D. I tried night football, hockey and indoor basketball. All network television lighting. I was surprised that it worked out well in football and at hockey the Overall diameter was small enough to get through a whole in the glass (unlike a 300 f2.8) However, the shortcomings at basketball were far too great. It is just too slow at 5.6 to be useful. I had to shoot at 5000 iso and NOISE, NOISE NOISE! Besides that, at a close participant/spectator venue like basketball, the DOF is too great. (depth of field) When shooting the other basket, the fans behind the players were sharp enough to be visually distracting. Similar issues with players on the bench behind the action. Also, the mechanics of the push pull zoom weren't user friendly for my needs. Between say 200 to 300, its very stiff and is a very small adjustment. The location and methodology of the locking zoom ring is a bad design. It takes two hands to lock or unlock. If you don't lock it in short, the lens slides all the way out to 300 and is very awkward. If this lens were half the price, or fixed at 3.5, I would buy it despite those shortcomings. Now others have said it's too big and heavy. I thought it was rather compact for what it is. It's only a few ounces heavier than the 70-200 2.8 and not much longer. If you were to replace that 70-200/ 2.8 around your neck with this, you'd hardly notice the difference. Except when the lens extends itself.

I purchased this when they were first released, so long ago I don't remember. This stayed on my 1DSIII 95% of the time and now stays on my 5DS R 98% of the time. The best praise I can offer is - IT JUST WORKS! where ever needed.

    Trade off for convenience

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon 9322A002 EF 28300mm f/3.55.6L IS USM Lens:

I've been using this lens with my EOS 5D Mark III for a couple of months and am happy with the convenience of not having to switch lenses. At a third of the price, I would have considered it a good value for a utility lens I use whenever I feel I'm going to be in need of that kind of quick versatility. The images are consistently very soft, lacking even acceptable sharpness in most cases. It performs reasonably well, if you limit yourself to middle aperatures in the 8 to 11 range, while sticking to a focal length between 100 and 170mm. So much for the vaunted versatility. Over-priced and over-rated. The downside isn't the extra weight, it's the overall performance.

I use this lens more then any other lens I own. Amazing lens. I shoot 80 percent of a wedding with this one lens. I do wish the tripod ring was more robust. I have had to replace mine and I am sending it in this week to be replaced again. I am really really hoping for a new version very soon.

Rented a few times, then finally bought it. My go-to workhorse lens I have on 95% of the time. If I had to pic one lens for the rest of my life, this is the one. Built like a tank and heavy, just love it!

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon 9322A002 EF 28300mm f/3.55.6L IS USM Lens:

Highly recommend. I read every review and watched every video I could find on this lens. I feel the reviews are accurate. If you read and watch them you will know exactly what you are buying. The only down side of this lens that I feel is non debatable is its weight. Yes it is a bit heavy. It doesn’t bother me at 6' 180lbs but some might be put off a bit. That said I love every other feature and aspect of this lens and I feel the weight is simply a byproduct of a superb design and build. There is one thing the reviews do not mention and it is of foremost importance and must be considered in todays high tech world. Lenses are part of an imaging system. The system consists mainly of the camera, the lens and the software. Comparing this lens to other sharper lenses means nothing unless you plan to make huge prints. With todays sensors and software the final image product is rarely compromised by a quality lens that is only 99% of some other super sharp zoom. Consider the incredible range of FL and the choice for me was simple. As has been stated in many of the reviews, rent it first if you can to make sure you will be OK with the weight. You'll love the image quality.

    An elephant of a Lens

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon 9322A002 EF 28300mm f/3.55.6L IS USM Lens:

The EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L is my walkabout lens on my 7DII. Although it is fairly large for a compact lens, I have no issues with its weight or size. It's not as sharp as my Canon prime lenses but its versatility far outweighs that issue. In low light conditions I use it with my 600EX-RT and couldn't be more pleased with the results. Fully understanding what this lens is and what it's capable of doing, my only issue with it is the zoom tension ring locking against the focus ring, and that's not that big a deal. Anyone in the market for a general purpose, highly versatile zoom lens that delivers amazing results, for what it is, must seriously consider acquiring one of these gems. It may be nicknamed the white elephant, but that's a good thing...

    L Lens Versatility

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon 9322A002 EF 28300mm f/3.55.6L IS USM Lens:

I suspect that anyone that is considering this lens is primarily interested in the range of versatility within one high quality lens, as was I. Whether on a crop sensor or full frame this is an amazing lens, especially if you don't want to carry your kit and switch lenses. Many people have discussed the weight as being an issue, but having the 70-200mm 2.8L IS and the 100-400mmL IS, it's only slightly heavier. This is the "one" lens that can do it all extremely well.

    Stop Waiting, Buy It!

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon 9322A002 EF 28300mm f/3.55.6L IS USM Lens:

I watched this lens for literally a year, reading review after review, trying to figure out if it was worth the money before I finally purchased it. Since I took it out of the box, I have not taken the lens off my camera (18 MP 60D) and LOVE IT! So much so that I'm about upgrade to a 5D or a 6D and I've finally fulfilled a long dream and officially started my photography company!! USES - I have gotten awesome shots at sporting events (Football, NHRA, Swimming), family sessions, portraits/headshots, architectural, and outdoor/landscape with this lens....There is nothing this lens will not do! Why I Waited - Outside of the cost, seeing the reviews about the weight of the lens is what made me the most nervous. Yes it is heavy, but after my 2nd or 3rd time shooting with the lens the weight was a non-issue/Not-noticeable. I shot for over 3 hours last week at a local park doing multiple family sessions and never grew tired at all. So seriously, quit worrying if it is worth it and buy it already!

    Great in bright light

Comments about CANON U.S.A., INC. Canon 9322A002 EF 28300mm f/3.55.6L IS USM Lens:

Okay, in reference to the earlier review; I kept the lens and I have been using it due to it's incredibly flexible range. I shot offroad races last weekend and the lens was the no brainer to take. I could get people in the pits close by and when the cars were at a distance you get (300mm) shots that don't look like they are taken close by. They look great. The clarity is very good and again the lens worked great right up to sundown. As long as you know this the lens is a killer. After the light dims go to super fast lens ( I avoid flash if at all possible.) So do you get a 28-300? I would do it again and give it 5 stars now. PS Yes I give the tightening ring more attention than I admit and it is a pain at Petco Park moving around, but when the action is fast and you want the tall lens and then it must be shorter and then close up and then long again... well that is this lens! The reviews of the images have been great.
