The Sescom SES-MKP-41 is a compact passive inline audio level controller designed to attenuate microphone-level signals. Engineered for audio professionals and enthusiasts alike, this device provides effortless level control between your microphone and preamp or mixing console-no power supply required, no added noise floor-just clean, immediate attenuation right at the source.
Because mic-level signals are exceptionally weak and sit at a low voltage (typically between -60dBV and -40dBV), these inline controllers are strictly designed using low-noise balanced XLR connections to preserve signal clarity and prevent interference. They're also designed for low-impedance (Lo-Z) microphone lines. They reduce voltage while maintaining proper source-and-load impedance matching, so your microphone's frequency response doesn't change.
Applications:
• Controlling High Sound Pressure Levels (SPL): When recording loud sound sources like drums, guitar cabinets, or screaming vocalists, a sensitive condenser microphone can output a signal that is too "hot" for a preamp to handle, causing digital clipping. An inline pad stops the distortion before it hits the interface.
• Plugging Line Gear into Mic Inputs: If you need to feed a line-level device (like a DJ mixer or keyboard) into a soundboard that only has XLR mic inputs, an inline pad drops the volume down to prevent devastating input distortion.
• Overcoming Sensitive Preamps: Some older vintage preamps or budget audio interfaces lack input pads or have high "minimum gain" thresholds. By adding a mic-level controller, it provides the headroom necessary to use sensitive microphones on normal speaking voices.
Sescom Tech Note: Intended for use with microphone-level signals. Not compatible with phantom power.
